The Wollondilly Macarthur MTB club , along with volunteers, restored the trail in the months prior to Christmas 2019, and the trail reopned on 22nd December. The club regularly holds ‘trail days’ to perform maintenance and add features to the trail.
Please see the regular updates on the Garden MTB Trail Facebook Page.
Enjoy Mountain Biking?
One of the best things about living in the area is having a world class mountain bike track at your doorstep. Located at the Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Annan, the (approx) 13Km of track has something for every level of rider.
First things first. To get to the gardens, the entry is via Narellan Road (see map at the end of this post). The MTB track is located at the big ideas garden which can be found pretty much at the other (southern) end of the botanic gardens.
Opening hours?
- Public: are permitted to use the Trail only during normal Garden hours of operation (10 am – 5 pm). Outside these hours, riders risk their vehicles being locked in and penalties apply for opening gates.
- Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens: are permitted to use the trail between sunrise and sunset if carrying their current membership card.
- During Daylight Savings, the gardens are open extended hours.
The track consists of three loops that join onto each other,
and are coloured coded and signposted at the beginning of each section:
Green – competent riders
The start of the trail. The first 50M or so is a shared trail, and then it separates into the fun stuff.
Just off to the right of this pic is a tap so you can (re)fill your water bottles.
Blue – intermediate riders
Here’s where you make a decision. Keep on going straight which will now be the blue leg, or turn right and stay on the green loop.
I would not call this particularly difficult, but there are some tricky sections to navigate. Plenty of room to pull off to the side, stop to rest and/or let fellow mountain bikers past.
Oh, and the blue loop contains a section (on the return part of the loop) called magpie – and for good reason. There is a magpie’s nest, and during the mating season the maggie does not like bike riders. Be careful!
Black – Advanced riders
Again, we can branch off here to the left (advanced), or do the return loop to join the green trail (to the right).
This bit (well for me anyway) is tricky, tiring but well worth the effort to ride it. It does definitely require extra skill and fitness to navigate.
Late 2014 there were some great extensions made to the back half of the black loop, including this fast berm:
The full ride map can be viewed here, (edit: Sorry link is dead now and I do not have the current one),
but note (as mentioned above) the advanced section was extended late in 2014 by approx 1-2 km.
This track is not only used for recreational riders, but also once held regular racing events. At this stage, there is no plans for anymore racing, but if that changes this post will be updated to reflect.
Leave a comment below on how good/bad you think the trail is.
Hi,
Im a secondary teacher at Oran Park Anglican College. I would like to take my PASS class on a mountain biking excursion. Some of the riders (including me) are novices to MTBiking. Are there any tracks suitable at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens for beginners/intermediates? What paperwork do I need to do to book an excursion? Thank you!
Bec
Hi Rebecca,
Apologies for the delayed reply.
The ‘green’ loop is (IMO) is perfect for beginner/intermediate riders.
Best to email the gardens (mount.annan@rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au) for additional and booking info.
Also, I realised that the link in the article above which shows the loops, is dead now (looks to be since their site had a makeover). I will correct this.
