Badgerys Creek Airport in the news again

Sydney’s 2nd airport location is in the news again, and once again Badgerys Creek is the name on everyone’s lips.

Macarthur Federal Liberal MP Russell Matheson met with Prime Minister Tony Abbott last week privately, and said afterwards that a decision would be made sooner rather than later. Call me a cynic but I’m sure I have heard that before (not from MP Matheson) when the subject of the second airport has been debated.

Apparently the Wilton area is off the radar (no pun intended) due to mining and coal leases in the area which would cause subsidences thus making airport construction difficult.

MP Matheson is opposed to the airport being built quick at Badgerys Creek. Also opposed to the 2nd Sydney airport being built there is Camden State MP Chris Paterson. It is interesting to note that from 2015, the Camden electoral boundaries will change to include Badgerys Creek so it is good to see MP Paterson against it.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out. I seem to recall talk of the second airport up every few months, disappearing for a while and then appearing again months or a year later – and correct me if I’ m wrong this has been going on for years and years.

From what I’ve read over the years, local residents are all against the 2nd airport being built relatively close to the local area. For the record, so am I.

What do you think of Badgerys Creek airport if it was to bebuilt? Feel free to leave a comment below.

As a resident of Blaxland I am totally opposed to this airport. Flight paths merging above my head at 5,000ft is just one reason. My biggest area of concern is the location itself.

Western Sydney is a known trap for air pollution, mostly from vehicle emissions. Sydney already sees 520 (Channel 7 News Report.) premature deaths from air pollution and most of these are in western Sydney. Add in diesel emissions from the trucks servicing the airport, passenger vehicles and emissions from aircraft and this is a recipe for disaster. The EIS states 6 deaths per 100 years but this is totally false. Maybe it was the case 20 years ago but the increase in vehicles and aircraft now, along with the figures released this week totally contradicts this estimate. Many more people in Sydney’s main growth area will become sick and some will die. The government knows this but they chose to hide the many negative impacts in the Appendices.

There are many more negatives, but for someone with a chronic illness which makes me vulnerable, this is my main reason for vehemently opposing the airport. Government says my death is acceptable. I don’t!
